Building a website is similar to building a house
- First of all you define the number of rooms, their place, how to get from one room to another : the plan
- Afterwards, once you have your plan, you can start the construction: the pages
- Finally, adding your content and the final design will be similar to furnishing and decorating it: the design
Creating an efficient
website is easier said than done
It’s a real challenge for your company! Your website should of course highlight your products or your services, but first of all it has to attract visitors… and therefore it should be recognized and selected by search engines (Google, Yahoo…).
Let’s be honest about it: if your site is not properly built, if your content is irrelevant and doesn’t respect the basics of SEO, your website will be pretty useless.

A - Answer this simple question: "Why create a website?"
The aims of a new site for
- What makes my company and its offer different from the competitors?
- What should I highlight on my website?
- What is going to make my visitors satisfied with my website?
- Which promise am I making to my visitors?
You’ll be defining what really matters for your website, and its main sections.
B - Know what to say, and how to say it to hit your target audience
These goals are defining the sections of your future website
Define the content of each section. A section may contain one or several pages. What matters the most is to respect a core principle: each page has one purpose only. If you have different purposes… then make different pages! It will enable each page to be correctly analyzed by search engines and presented to the right audience.
Start with creating the first page for each section.
For example, the section “Beginning” aims at presenting interesting tools for your company. It has a single page that fulfills this purpose. The section “Tools” has several pages, each of them with a unique and precise purpose.
C - Integrate the right keywords in your content
The keywords make a difference on your SEO
The keywords represent your activity and might even be specific to each section of your website. They should be integrated (by order of importance):
- in the page’s title,
- in the page’s description,
- in the different headings on the page,
- in your texts, and in the descriptions of your images
D - Optimize the browsing between the different sections of your website
Your visitor should be able to browse easily through your website
Your menu (with max 6 to 7 sections) enables your visitors to access easily each section of your website.
Besides the menu, it is useful to create links between the different pages of your site:
- in the pictures,
- with link buttons,
- in the footer,
Keep in mind that the visitor might arrive on the website via any page (not necessarily the home) and that he should find the info he is looking for in max 3 clicks.
You might that an external viewpoint would help you being more efficient, or you have to adjust your marketing strategy.
